Swine Flu Could Hospitalize 2 Million in U.S. This Winter
According to a recent report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, about 300,000 patients infected with the H1N1 virus this winter will clog ICUs across the nation, and nearly 2 million Americans could be hospitalized this year. The report indicates up to 90,000 patients infected with H1N1 could die, while up to 40 percent of the U.S. population could develop symptoms of the virus. The normal flu virus kills an estimated 35,000 Americans, though mostly the elderly. The H1N1 strain impacts middle-aged adults and adolescents the most. The report outlines several recommended responses to a potential H1N1 outbreak, including the appointment of a White House staff member to coordinate pandemic decision making, an expansion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance systems and accelerated production of flu vaccines to ensure they are available in mid-September.
